Metroid Dread is a triumphant return for both Samus Aran and developer MercurySteam. This is a super-slick, hugely entertaining and exquisitely designed entry in the Metroid franchise that plays better than anything we've seen from the series so far. With a bunch of fantastic new abilities, super tense and enjoyable stealth sections, plenty of great big boss fights and a story that fans will definitely enjoy, we can't really see how this one could have been any better. Best Metroid game ever? This could be the one.

But this isn’t just a reskinned version of the SNES classic, with MercurySteam improving upon the formula with new stealth segments, outstanding visuals and tight combat with a highly rewarding counter system. It’s too early to make a final judgement, but I’m optimistic this could be one of the best first-party Switch games, period.

Metroid Dread is an instant classic. Its seamless blend of exploration, combat, puzzle-solving, and light touches of story creates one of the most engaging experiences on Nintendo Switch. Samus Aran's journey has been through its ups and downs, but the mesospheric high of Metroid Dread is evidence there is so, so much more left for the bounty hunter to accomplish, and another adventure can't come soon enough.

Metroid Dread is one of the finest games to release this year. It not only encapsulates everything that makes Metroid, Metroid, but it does so in a way that feels new and fresh. Dread stands on its own two feet and demands to be played. The genre has been missing its namesake for far too long now, so I am happy to say that Dread is a worthy crown-bearer. I hope to see more from Samus, Nintendo, and Mercury Stream in the future.

This is 2D Metroid at its peak and makes us wonder what could have happened if Dread had been released back in 2005 when it was first rumored. Could we now have a lot more 2D Metroid games? Or could the formula had dried out? What would have been its impact on the Metroidvania landscape? There is no way to know.

The Game Awards, su cita ineludible.

This final 13-16 hour instalment is an exquisite showcase of 2D Metroid in its prime. Newcomers and die-hard fans of the series can revel in a Nintendo Switch game that not only provides one of the most deadly and thrilling experiences on Nintendo’s latest handheld to date, but one that’s such a joy to play thanks to control refinements and HD graphics. Metroid Dread is an explosive and emotional end to a beloved story that cannot be missed, and we’re already itching to see where the next mission takes us. Just as long as it doesn’t include the dreaded E.M.M.I.

Metroid Dread is excellent, and a worthy game to carry the title of “Metroid 5.” Building a huge, open world from scratch has let MercurySteam create a much more engaging and well-paced Metroid experience than Samus Returns, and the developer has clearly shaken the jankiness associated with its Castlevania days. It looks great, controls well, and is satisfying to play.

Metroid Dread is a culmination of everything the series has been up to this point but afterwards it needs to evolve into something genuinely new. Whether that will be Metroid Prime 4, or if the first person games will continue to be regarded more as spin-offs, remains to be seen but if this is a send off for the 2D Metroid games as a whole then it’s the best one anyone could’ve asked for.

Metroid Dread is the exact jolt of energy the Metroid series needed. What’s 19 years old feels new again thanks to sharp gameplay additions that enhance both battles and exploration. It especially excels in its atmosphere and storytelling, creating an Alien-esque sci-fi horror story that takes the franchise’s space opera to eerie new heights. The queen is back to remind us who puts the Metroid in Metroidvania.

Metroid Dread sees the galaxy's best bounty hunter return in fine form. It takes the terror of being hunted from Metroid Fusion, the more modern direction of Samus Returns, and the freedom to add to the series' decades of lore to create something that's nigh on essential for Metroid fans.

Metroid Dread suffers from some minor grievances, but overall it is a remarkable achievement in not just resurrecting a dormant and beloved series, proving its authority in the genre it inhabits, or exhibiting the kind of airtight design we’d expect from a title of this calibre. It is a remarkable achievement because it is one of those few rare games that sets itself an atmospheric goal and launches it towards and through the stratosphere. This, here, is one of 2021’s very best games - we’re always in for a treat when Samus returns.

Metroid Dread is a fantastic return to form for the 2D Metroid titles. Building upon the lessons of Samus Returns, it captures the feel of Metroid nearly perfectly. It's incredibly fun to play, balances the story and gameplay in the way a Metroid game should, and in general, it's just excellent. Its few flaws stood out more in retrospect than while I was playing the game. It's easily one of the best 2D Metroid titles, and it's a fantastic way to close out the ongoing storyline.

Metroid Dread proves that the Metroid franchise is still ready to innovate the genre it helped build with exciting new ideas. While it hasn't taken on all the lessons from newcomers that have filled in since its absence, it doesn't feel like an outsider looking in.

Metroid games have always had trace elements of sci-fi horror in them, and Metroid Dread is no different. Rather than inject the series with new levels of fear and tension, Dread seeks to highlight the latent spookiness already present. To that end, it works! That familiar sense of powerlessness and fear is given new life in this game. Suddenly your initial state of weakness has greater narrative weight. Furthermore, the lateral expansion of your move set feels like a natural conclusion. Every victory is one you clawed and fought for with all your might. Each new stage is filled with fresh dangers to keep you moving with an abundance of caution and care. Even the complex controls and the punishing boss fights are in service to this vision. Metroid Dread takes small, but significant, steps to expand and innovate upon the established series formula. Metroid and Metroidvania fans alike won’t want to miss this entry.

Metroid is a game series that gamers have been asking for for years. We got a Metroid game on the 3DS that was a remake and a good one at that but we wanted a new original game. Dread gives us not only an original ending to the game series story as it is but also one of the best Metroidvania games on the Nintendo Switch. I’m lucky in that I got to play the game on the Nintendo Switch OLED Console and it looks even better, performs even better whether it be docked or handheld. What I love about Metroid Dread is that it has the solid gameplay you expect but they also add in horror aspects by having an entity called an E.M.M.I.E that stalks your every move in certain areas, the lighting goes dark, the music gets sinister and it’s all rather exciting as its a case of if she/he/it catches you then it’s a one-hit death unless you get a lucky parry. Metroid is still a bitch in that the signposting of what to do is not always clear, boss fights can get tough but I let it all go because just walking and jumping around this world is incredible, I mean you get all these stunning locations, puzzles, and fights that just all come together into a complete package. It’s weird but I think the weakest part is the lack of actual Samus, the story is fine but Samus is almost mute and it kinda sours an otherwise brilliant experience. Even if you are not a Metroid fan you can get enjoyment from the game, the level design is a fine example of how to do it, got lost and don’t know what to do or where to go? Who cares just poke and prod your way around and maybe find a secret or two. It’s that kind of game that encourages you to do as you want, challenge yourself and it’s funny to say but I’m not alone here, people have finished the game and immediately gone back in on the harder difficulties. It’s been a long time coming but Metroid Dread has taken the series to whole new levels and it’s a must-play title for the Nintendo Switch and if you can play it on the Nintendo Switch OLED Console it’s a visual treat!

Metroid Dread feels like a celebration of 2D Metroid. It manages to stay true to the original games, whilst also introducing some new elements that keeps things feeling fresh. The game is held back by some questionable level design, the E.M.M.I feeling repetitive and a definite knowledge barrier for series newcomers.

More than anything else, Metroid Dread feels like going back to a place of comfort after a long time away. Though the gameplay is refined and new features have been added to the mix, Dread sticks closely to the formula of its predecessors. In the end, for longtime fans like myself, that's probably for the best. There's nothing to dread here. We're home again.

Metroid Dread creates a palpable level of tension that we hope to see more of in Samus's future adventures. However, we couldn't shake the underlying feeling that the Metroid formula, as a whole, needs a severe shake-up. Metroid Dread certainly has its moments where it dares to break the mold but, all too often, it resorts to the same tactics that helped the series first stand out in 1986. Nintendo single-handedly invented an entire sub-genre when it released Metroid all those decades ago, but sadly Samus's latest mission fails to further her legacy in any meaningful way.

It's a cliché, but Metroid Dread won't be a game for everyone. If you like a game that doesn't hold your hand at all, is brutally difficult, requires precision from every movement and busts your back, you'll love Samus' latest mission. If not, your experience will vary depending on how much you can put up with the genre’s pitfalls and what might be considered obtuse design decisions. Metroid Dread almost broke me several times, but it might just be what you're after. It took a while, but Samus is back, and hopefully not going away for so long this time.

Metroid Dread is likely to give those that have been counting down the days to its release exactly what they want: a thrilling experience in line with what they loved about past games. There are original ideas here - but they’re better considered as evolutions of what came before rather than anything groundbreaking. There’s stumbles here and there with the difficulty and progression signposting, but all of that feels very Metroid. Dread is no Super Metroid, but that game is a stone-cold all-timer. Putting that game aside, Dread is up to the series standard, and is well worth a look.

Metroid Dread goes straight into my top games of the year and quite close to the top too. I will have to see how I feel about it after the dust has settled but it’s brilliant, respects the player’s intelligence and is downright gorgeous. If you’re a fan of the older 2D Metroid games then it’s a no-brainer, even if not, I think few players will be disappointed with this purchase. Right, I have a few errant collectables to track down. Even without post-game rewards, Metroid Dread is a thrilling entry for the series, and for the Metroidvania sub-genre. It may not have the biggest and most cryptic world, or the best soundtrack, but it’s one of the best paced and varied examples on offer. It introduces new ideas to the series, while putting a new spin on tired concepts; pulling it off confidently with a beautiful presentation.

Metroid Dread Review | Footsteps
This is not the greatest game of the year, no, this is just a tribute.
Lucas White
Oct 13, 2021
Metroid Dread is a lot of things. It’s a long-lost sequel over a decade in the making. It’s a bizarre flashpoint for emulation discourse. It’s the end of a storyline that started on the Famicom Disk System.
Since the beginning of Nintendo, Metroid has been around in some form or another, struggling along as the company’s cool but unsuccessful sci-fi cult darling. With Castlevania fumbler and Metroid II remake studio MercurySteam once again doing the muscle work, Metroid Dread is all of those things and more.
It’s a lot to process.
Metroid Dread Review
First of all, Metroid Dread is thoroughly traditional. You’ve seen that in the day one reviews no doubt, the notion that this feels like Metroid back to its roots, whatever that means.
But, like the previous MercurySteam Metroid romp, Dread takes Super Metroid as its foundation and builds a bunch of modern conventions and technical upgrades on top.
You explore a massive map, pass obstacles via hidden abilities and fight some mean bosses by feeding them hundreds of missiles. It’s the Metroid formula but in HD for the first time.
In gaming today, “Metroidvania” is a common tag you’ll find in any store. This genre, once obscure, is everywhere from indie darlings to AAA blockbusters. Metroid was first, arguably, and you can tell here. Everything just explains itself, from the missiles to the bombs and everything in-between.
Metroid Dread is straightforward, except for when it isn’t. Despite how much fun I had overall exploring this game’s mysterious planet, the moment to moment was often unpleasant. Dread follows the “bigger and better” school of thought as a sequel.
The maps are enormous, and getting through everything requires granular progress. You upgrade your missiles and regular beams several times, along with new twists on mainstay abilities. The map is an overdetailed mess, overloading the player with information that isn’t even needed at times.
Related: Essential Metroid Titles and Where to Play Them
The game’s biggest weakness is that sense of overdoing it. It’s like this version of Metroid Dread, the one that eventually came out of all the starts and stops over the years, started as a piece of overeager fanfiction.
MercurySteam’s team clearly has a love for Samus Aran and her wide array of tools and weapons. But that reverence often feels shallow when the end result is just, “Samus does all the things! Badass!”
This feeds into a big problem with accessibility. Metroid Dread demands a lot of your hands and fingers, especially during the increasingly intense boss encounters. There’s been some “is this too hard” discourse, but I think that’s a byproduct of ergonomics rather than difficulty.
Mastering Dread’s kit means serious hand/eye multitasking, and anyone with any sort of physical barrier will have a hard time. Not to mention the map, which is all kinds of visual noise I personally struggled with at times as someone who is actively fighting ADHD.
Sure, that’s a personal anecdote, but it’s probably one of many roadblocks outside of the game players may run into. The massive maps also make backtracking more and more of a chore, especially since the fast travel points are often just parts of navigation puzzles, take forever to run to and force you to watch little cutscenes/loading sequences.
There are so many moments governed by one way routes for so long, it often feels like too little too late when you finally do open up a shortcut or two.
That said, taking everything at face value, Metroid Dread is a blast to play. Samus is all kinds of mobile here, able to dash across, up and down through her surroundings like a beefy robot ninja lady.
If you can get into a flow with sliding, jumping, swinging, rolling and such, the speed and agility feels great. But it’s just as easy to run into a big fumble, especially when timing and accuracy suddenly becomes an issue.
Metroid games have often used combat scenarios as flavor rather than focus, but Metroid Dread flips that around in ways that aren’t compatible with the foundations being built upon. Samus is kinda limited in specific ways, and when you crash into those limits during a high speed action sequence it can be easy to trip over
Yourself. Especially since a big part of Dread is E.M.M.I., a robotic death machine that will stalk Samus if she enters its territory.
At first, these moments with E.M.M.I. encounters truly earn that “Dread” title. From the beeping noises the robots make when searching to the way their bodies contort to adjust flawlessly to your movements, the creep factor is there.
But the way these encounters are designed, specifically the way you can finally take these foes down, is a long road to frustrating tedium. Defeating an E.M.M.I. involves a convoluted powerup that alters the game’s controls and perspective, and requires moments of sustained fire in order to activate a certain vulnerability.
Because videogames, these encounters are all the same chain of events, with increasing challenge. The problem is that forces the map to accommodate for that challenge, and you end up having to do a bunch of parkour challenges to find the designated patch of ground made long enough for that sustained fire.
To that point, you often end up in small loops when it’s time to take on an E.M.M.I., so it starts to feel like a routine in a bad way, sapping the “Dread” from these encounters and turning them into annoying math problems.
It’s kind of a bummer, especially since those earlier moments are so pitch perfect. I certainly dreaded the last couple of these fights, but only because I was tired of dealing with them. It sounds like I hate this game, doesn’t it? These are all issues that stuck around in my head for sure, but like I said earlier I had a great time overall.
Every little moment of frustration was connected by much longer stretches of classic Metroidvania play. Exploring, finding little hidden items, getting those big upgrades you know opened up a lot, all of that is here and bountiful.
I may have some beef with a few decisions here and there, but again it’s clear MercurySteam’s team knows why these games are so well-loved by their fans. But like a certain other “Vania,” you can see and feel all the enthusiasm and reverence that comes at the expense of things like progress, subtlety or storytelling.
Metroid Dread is a big ol’ Metroid map with lots of Metroidy things to do and it’s a big Metroid party. But what does it do with the material? What story is the map telling, what’s the driving force behind all the familiar shenanigans?
When the cutscenes kick on and the dialogue shows up, I get an idea of where Dread is headed and how it’s attempting to fit, extend and even conclude the story. But playing the game versus watching it often feel like two different places.
I’m all over the place with Metroid Dread, and I don’t think my mind will settle down on it for a long time past this initial review. This game is absolutely a well made, videogame-ass videogame with tons of secrets, cool action, more exploration than I know what to do with and then some.
But what often made Metroid games of the past so good was their atmosphere, their careful blending of game and narrative, their willingness to slow down and tell a story without words. In comparison, Metroid Dread feels more like a tribute to those games than the next in line.
It’s all flashy and high octane, turning Samus into a Hollywood action hero who kicks ass and takes no shit. It’s “Metroid is awesome” blown up into a major game release, with some canon-extending cutscenes bolted on. It’s certainly more thoughtful than Samus “entirely missed the point” Returns, a definite improvement. But I expected more, and I don’t think that’s unreasonable.

Metroid Dread is a good Metroid game and will likely be a favorite among fans of this series. I still think that Metroid Dread could have benefited from taking more pages out of that of contemporaries but the parry mechanic blended with the extra movement options does make for an engaging action game that is worth overcoming.

Metroid Dread's often idiosyncratic approach to combat and control has a wide-reaching impact on what this 2D adventure can ultimately achieve. There's a great game buried in here, but you'll need to constantly push through some frustrating encounters and points of friction to find it. This isn't the return Metroid deserved after Fusion, but after 19 years perhaps it's no surprise that Samus Aran is a little off her game.

I left Metroid Dread feeling quite conflicted about it. On the one hand, I do think it is fundamentally well designed, and the main gameplay element - the robot stalkers - are woven into the Metroid formula beautifully. On the other hand, that Metroid formula is getting long in the tooth and Dread doesn't do nearly enough to revitalise it. Dread is fine. It's not just nearly memorable enough for a game that fans have been waiting for so many years for now.

Dread reimagines the Metroid format with confidence and care, and it trusts the player to make leaps along the way. While following its interwoven path of epic boss fights, satisfying upgrades, and otherworldly environments, all I could think was that this is the Metroid game I’ve been waiting for. It easily stands astride the best entries in the series, and I eagerly await a follow-up in the year 2040.

This is a modern Metroid, a 2D adventure delivered with triple-A panache, yet one that retains the grace and poise that's always marked the highlights of this series, and marked it out from its many imitators. How blessed we are to have Samus properly back, and what a marvel it is to be reminded how special Metroid can be. The wait, I'm delighted to say, was somehow worth it.

“Metroid Dread” was always going to struggle against its own legacy. I can’t help but think of what we’ve been missing since Nintendo left its wildly innovative spin-off “Metroid Prime” series to languish for the last 14 years. Nintendo has promised a fourth game in the main line series, and that kind of fresh look at the Metroidvania genre demands a revisit. “Metroid Dread” is a good Metroid-style game, but does little more. Even the EMMI horror aspect was previously explored at the end of the excellent remake of the first game, “Metroid: Zero Mission.”

Samus Aran’s Metroid Saga is a genre-defining franchise. The legendary intellectual property inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of video games since its inception, and it will likely continue to do so long after. With this knowledge in mind, it is easy to see why and how this trend will continue with the excellence of Metroid Dread. The game is simply fantastic and easily sets the bar for Metroidvania titles. From its somewhat cliched nature, through to how exciting collecting a simple power-up feels, Metroid Dread manages to capture all of the necessary emotions players want [need] to feel while gaming. The setting of ZDR is a new and fresh take on what 19 years of spin-offs and disappointments have offered, while the seemingly indestructible E.M.M.I. mechs spectacularly prove where the game’s genre came from. In short, fans and new gamers alike will find a lot of enjoyment out of Metroid Dread. It is certainly a love letter to fans of the franchise, but also acts as a wonderful entry point for newer gamers. Simply superb.

Metroid Dread is hauntingly beautiful and dreadfully terrifying, giving us one of the best experiences on the Nintendo Switch. Bolstered by the gorgeous new OLED model, planet ZDR is a dreary place that will make your skin crawl at times. Fans of the older games, particularly Super Metroid will resonate with Dread. It only took two decades but the conclusion of the Metroid saga is satisfying, delivering one of the best experiences yet. There’s a reason we’ve classified an entire genre of games as Metroidvania – the queen cannot be toppled, and Metroid Dread is a shining example of how the original is always better.
