Abathor, the action-platformer developed by Pow Pixel Games is a tribute to arcade classics and a great reason to celebrate for fans of the genre. Abathor squeezes but doesn't choke. It's challenging and can get frustrating, but the sense of gratification that comes from beating a tricky boss or level is priceless. It is an ideal game to share with friends, but it can also be enjoyed (and a lot!) alone. Undoubtedly, one of the best proposals of modern action and platform.

Abathor es un maravilloso y desafiante juego de acción y plataformas con una jugabilidad de estilo arcade inspirada en grandes clásicos de los años 90 del pasado siglo. Hacía mucho tiempo que un título no me parecía tan completo y sobresaliente en todos sus apartados: divertido y emocionante de jugar, con una historia legendaria y épica a partes iguales y un arte impresionante. Era uno de los juegos que más ganas tenía de este 2024 y tras haberlo jugado solo puedo decir que es de los mejores indie que han salido en lo que llevamos de año y que ha superado las altas expectativas que me había generado.

Si te gustan los juegos de acción y plataformas, debes jugarlo. Si te gustan los juegos tipo arcade, debes jugarlo. Si te gustan los desafíos y los retos, debes jugarlo. Si te gustan los juegos retro, debes jugarlo. Si te gustan los videojuegos, debes jugarlo. Sino te gusta Abathor, debes jugarlo, porque al final se ganará un hueco en tu corazón. 

An exceedingly well crafted title that wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, Abathor delivers in all departments. Clever thoughtful design, beautifully detailed pixelart and a killer retro soundtrack that is the cherry on top.

Abathor es un auténtico disfrute visual, sonoro y jugable que hará las delicias tanto de aquellos que busquen evocar recuerdos de la generación de los 16-bit y salones recreativos de la década de los 80 y 90 como de los aficionados al género y aquellos que deseen aproximarse a él.

Abathor es un título que será muy disfrutable tanto por los amantes de lo retro como por aquellos que deseen una aventura en cooperativo. Es tremendamente adictiva y hasta que te la pasas del tirón prácticamente no te vas a levantar de la silla.

Abathor is a surprising and refreshing proposal that hides behind that brilliant wrapping provided by “retro” a very polished game in which every last detail has been taken care of to offer a game like those of the past but without discarding any of the current playable comforts.

Abathor es una vuelta a los clásicos de 16 bits con todo lo bueno que eso conlleva, y añade elementos actuales que hacen que destaque dentro de su género de aventuras arcade. Los combates y las plataformas son igual de estimulantes, divertidos, y aumentan en dificultad de forma progresiva, aportando grandes sensaciones a cada paso. Algunos problemas con las hitboxes, y varios picos de dificultad excesivos, pueden influir en la experiencia que ofrece, pero, en general, es totalmente satisfactoria.

Abathor is a 2D action-platformer that is very complete in all its aspects, focused on defeating mythological creatures in a great adventure that we have to live to save Antarctica.

Hablar de Abathor es hacerlo de un sentido, pero no gratuito, homenaje a los arcades clásicos de plataformas y acción. Una propuesta que no se limita a emular y que, por el camino, va un paso más allá superando en casi todo a sus principales fuentes de inspiración.

An epic platforming challenge awaits all those that brave Abathor’s trials. Those willing to cut their teeth with its “traditional” controls will enjoy taking on this demonic horde.

Lejos de las vertientes metroidvania y roguelite que saturan el mercado en la actualidad, Abathor nos ofrece una propuesta sencilla a la antigua usanza conjugando plataformas y acción con elementos modernos que lo hacen más disfrutable por jugadores más jóvenes. Con una dificultad muy bien medida y algunos aportes en forma de progresiónmás favorable, este título se consagra como uno de los juegos españoles a tener en cuenta durante este 2024.

Pow Pixel Games has left a good mark on the hack-and-slash genre with Abathor. Despite slight gameplay differences and slight co-op hiccups, there’s a lot here for players. The co-op is good fun, though the game delivers on solo action, too. It also looks and sounds awesome, and trying out all the characters (to find a favorite) is fun.

Abathor is definitely a little gaming gem. A declaration of love from David and Javier Garay towards the arcade classics of the late 80s. The attention to detail makes the game impressive from a visual and sound point of view, embellishing the atmosphere of the title. Unfortunately Abathor has retained anachronistic elements and some naivety that can also be partly corrected. Although the difficulty and the perception of it is also subjective, some mechanics objectively only add artificial difficulty. All in all, Abathor is a good product that deserves to be played, which is mostly aimed at a specific niche. I invite you to at least try it even if you are not “old school” players because its aesthetics and old style gameplay might fascinate you.

An action-platformer that revives the flames of a genre that disappeared for almost two decades. Abathor isn't a perfect title and doesn't invent anything new, but it does what it has to in a balanced and polite manner, with an entertaining co-op mode capable of attract players of all ages.

Abathor recreates the experience of playing side-scrolling beat ‘em ups in the arcade, with solo and local and online co-op modes available to challenge. With no save points, this is a very challenging experience!

El neo retro tiene un nuevo representante a considerar en esta jungla cada vez más llena de juegos 2D de corte clásico. Abathor sabe abrirse camino, con su jugabilidad solvente, su control bien balanceado, su gameplay variado y su elevado número de fases. Todo embutido en un trabajo 2D fantástico y con unos temas musicales de calidad y variados. Simplemente, hay que tener en cuenta si vamos a jugar acompañados en algún momento, o no contamos con ello, porque Abathor donde de verdad lo da todo es jugando en cooperativo local, con algo tan potente como tener a cuatro jugadores simultáneos salvando la Atlántida.

As a whole, there’s nothing really wrong with Abathor. It’s a fun, straight forward action platformer. The setting and protagonists does give it a bit of Golden Axe to the game. It does make for a fun co-op experience. While it is annoying to have your gear/upgrades reset when you load the game is pretty stupid, it’s still a fun adventure game. If you’re looking for a simplistic co-op game for the holidays, you can’t go wrong with Abathor.

Despite some outdated decisions, especially in the credits system, Abathor is an ideal choice for those who miss a new adventure with the spirit of the old games. The varied theme, with a diverse bestiary, fun bosses to face and the various replayability options, complement an excellent homage to a more pixelated era.

An ode to the arcade hack-'n'-slash genre, Abathor offers an old-school experience, for better and worse. There’s extra novelty in taking the four-player co-op anywhere with an undocked Switch, simple controls mean that four Joy-Con are more than comfortable, and the gorgeous pixel art looks great on the smaller screen. It sounds great, too, and co-op is huge fun with a few couch-based adventurers.

Con un gameplay divertido y un plataformeo desafiante, se puede llegar a disfrutar con un poco de paciencia si reliquias del pasado como los créditos o la muerte instantánea no te afectan.

Mientras segas vidas la música chiptune retumbará en tus altavoces y la dificultad será al principio muy baja pero irá aumentando hasta que pidas clemencia. En definitiva todo el sabor de los arcades de los ochenta pero sin tragar humo ajeno ni tener que darle unas monedillas al macarra de la puerta.

Abathor is old arcade action at its best. Rich, detailed levels with satisfying combat and platforming make this well worth picking up for anyone looking to take on its challenge. It’s certainly a challenge that may feel harsh to some players, but old-school arcade players would likely not have it any other way. For me, it felt like a game that took the excitement and instant gratification of an arcade game but felt appropriately adapted for modern players. La idea de este videojuego de plataformas al estilo retro es muy buena, sólida y sobre todo, divertida.

Tras terminarlo y disfrutarlo, no puedo decir otra cosa que desempolvad el espíritu de Conan y poneros a los mandos de este juego que hará las delicias de muchos.  Además es muy rejugable, sobre todo para conseguir el final verdadero. Estamos con un título que ha devuelto el espíritu más 16Bit a la época actual, un homenaje y renovación, que no dejará indiferente a nadie.
