The Great Whale Road es un juego de rol y gestión con una ambientación rica y documentada, un estilo artístico envidiable y varias ideas jugables muy buenas. Desgraciadamente, hay facetas que no terminan de cuajar.

The Great Whale Road manages to balance its many moving parts just fine; it's just that one of those parts doesn't hold up its own weight very well. When it's about progressing the story, or keeping your village going, this game feels really good. Combat doesn't manage to hold itself up to that same standard, and fails to feel like anything other than an add-on.

In conclusione The Great Whale Road risulta un titolo piacevole da giocare, se si entra nella giusta mentalità. Le vere pecche del gioco sono imputabili al suo essere ancora incompleto, vista la mancanza delle razze iniziali promesse dagli sviluppatori, quali Frisoni e Sassoni, e ai combattimenti che andrebbero migliorati ed ulteriormente velocizzati. Inoltre un altro aspetto che andrebbe migliorato è quello degli eventi che si paleseranno dinnanzi a noi, a volte si ripeteranno uguali a se stessi. Per il resto The Great Whale Road fa quello che promette, ci trasporta in una dimensione fatta di vichinghi, villaggi, navi e scontri. La componente RPG poteva essere meglio gestita, ma nel complesso ritengo che il videogame si presti ad essere apprezzato da tutti gli appassionati del genere e da chi ama la cultura nordica. Lanciamo un in bocca al lupo ai ragazzi di Sunburned Games, sperando che riescano presto a limare i difetti del titolo e ad aggiungere ciò che manca per rendere questa esperienza ancora più immersiva.

Una bocciatura per The Great Whale Road sarebbe ingiusta oltre che sbagliata, non tutto il potenziale che avevamo intravisto in sede di anteprima è stato espresso da questa versione 1.0, ma di aspetti positivi ce ne sono davvero parecchi, su tutti l’ottima cura per il setting storico, un’avventura narrata più che degnamente attraverso dialoghi ben scritti e una sapiente ricostruzione e caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Anche nella sua semplicità, la strategia a turni funziona, anche se un maggior sforzo l’avrebbe resa meno semplice e lineare. Purtroppo di nei ce ne sono, tipici di quelle produzioni che, davanti a una buona idea, non riescono a svilupparla e approfondirla in tutte le sue sfaccettature, e così gli eventi casuali si ripetono ciclicamente e con frequenza, le missioni sono lineari e senza diramazioni e l’aspetto gestionale risulta una bozza poco sviluppata.

Sunburned Games realiza un trabajo notable para tratarse de un estudio indie y ser su titulo de “debut”, con un videojuego interesante y entretenido jugablemente, sobre todo durante sus primeras horas, pero que peca de falta de profundidad y diversidad de opciones, lo cual termina haciendo al título repetitivo en este apartado. En cuanto al aspecto gráfico y sonoro, el juego es una delicia, y es donde el software destaca con más fuerza, con unos diseños de gran personalidad y muy bellos, un más que correcto funcionamiento tecnológico y una banda sonora a la altura del apartado artístico.

All in all, there’s an awful lot going on in The Great Whale Road but it feels like it’s slipped in its execution. As great a concept as it seems, gameplay soon becomes boring, feeling a drag from one quest to the next. Coupled with the need to revert to much older saves if you haven’t quite done the right thing (or if you encounter a bug), it might be worth waiting for more polish and extra content before forking out £15 for it.

Sunburned Games ha asentado las bases de una propuesta interesante a nivel mecánico y narrativo que, por desgracia, queda muy lejos de lo que debería ser. En el futuro veremos dos campañas más y esperamos que el estudio valenciano aprenda de los errores encontrados en este primer viaje y convierta los siguientes en algo menos tedioso y con todas las posibilidades que debiera.

For many turn based strategy titles it is the combat that keeps you engaged. The Great Whale Road has some really great writing but ultimately that is not enough to carry the game. The combat is so intensely unrewarding that this is one story I’d rather have read in paperback format.

The Great Whale Road is a fine idea but it has a failed execution in some areas. Keep in mind this is an Early Access beta and there will probably be some changes as the game goes along, but right now it just isn’t there yet. We’ll have to see where the game stands when it’s finally released in full, but for now, best to wait on it as you’ll probably end up confused and bored.

The Great Whale Road does have potential, and it’s clear that a lot of hard work and research went into it. However, in its current state, it’s not a game I would recommend picking up. I’ve checked out older videos and the team has made plenty of big changes throughout the game’s development–I wouldn’t write off The Great Whale Road entirely, but unless there’s a massive update in the next six months, the game might be destined for obscurity.
