Digital Minds nos traslada a un japón feudal lleno de monstruos, acción, y animaciones stop motion que son toda una delicia visual. Algunos problemas con las hit boxes, y niveles puntuales con fallos en su diseño pueden lastrar la experiencia y entorpecen su ritmo general, pero es un juego desafiante que nos empuja a reflexionar sobre la creación de combos, y los enemigos a enfrentar, muy recomendable.

La potencia visual, el maravilloso apartado artístico y la narración muy intensa se combinan con un combate estratégico, dinámico y personalizable, en un diseño jugable 2D de acción, plataformas, exploración y semi-RPG bastante conseguido. The Spirit of the Samurai es una de esas aventuras que dejan huella y calan hondo, el viaje de un joven samurái y su mascota dentro de una historia oscura llena de horror japonés, viviendo al filo de una espada. Habrá cosas que podrían estar mejor, que están sujetas a mejora afortunadamente, pero esta epopeya contada en diferentes tiempos funciona bastante bien en diferentes niveles.

Lo que está claro es que la experiencia general como The Spirit of the Samurai es satisfactoria, incluso más allá de tener un apartado artístico tan especial. El doblaje (en inglés o japonés) está muy logrado, y la historia, que también conecta con el presente en cierto modo, me ha entretenido durante unas cuantas horas hasta los créditos finales. Si te gustan los Soulslike más lineales y estás buscando algo diferente, The Spirit of the Samurai es para ti.

Uno de ellos es los enemigos, ya que siempre son los mismos y se suele abusar bastante de colocar muchos de ellos para generar esa sensación de dificultad.

es un juego que a simple vista impresiona por su estilo visual en stop-motion y su sólida narrativa que se basa en la mitología japonesa. La combinación de su arte, el diseño y la historia ofrece el reflejo de una fantasía que se convierte en una experiencia sólida. Sin embargo, esta experiencia no está exenta de desequilibrios.

The Spirit of the Samurai è un po’ quel gioco che facilmente si etichetta come occasione sprecata, proprio in virtù delle tante idee che presenta, sia sul fronte tecnico che artistico, per poi scoprire che è tutto fumo negli occhi e tolte quelle due o tre idee ben innestate, il resto dell’esperienza è un reiterare continuamente quelle meccaniche per diverse ore.

Più avanzavamo con la nostra avventura in The Spirit of the Samurai più una frase continuava a frullarci per la testa: "Però è un peccato...", questa purtroppo risulta il riassunto perfetto della produzione, un titolo che tanto ha da offrire dal punto di vista tecnico, di trama ed immersione e tanto riesce a toppare da quello di gameplay, volendo offrire diversi sistemi originali ma risultando estremamente sbilanciato in ognuno di essi; eppure anche con questi difetti ci sentiamo comunque di consigliare il prodotto, in quanto un'opera prima così non si vede tutti i giorni e non si può neanche pretendere di fare centro perfetto; probabilmente non vincerà nessun premio ai TGA ma l'avventura di Takeshi saprà trasportavi nel Giappone più mitologico che possiate immaginarvi.

The Spirit of the Samurai brilla por su folklore su diseño de enemigos y sus niveles pero desafortunadamente debido a su mal rendimiento, unas animaciones un poco torpes y hasta cierto punto lentas, hacen que la experiencia de juego sea mucho más fea.

Un résultat artistique et technique parfaitement maîtrisé. Le mix entre folklore japonais et horreur est saisissant et sublimé par le stop motion. Le gameplay mériterait encore quelques itérations cependant, notamment côté difficulté, mais cela ne nous empêche pas de vouloir voir plus de projets d'un studio avec autant de cœur, peut-être une suite qui sait ?

Die filmreife 2D Grafik wird durch großartig gemachte Zwischensequenzen ergänzt, hier merkt man, dass die Entwickler in der Vergangenheit als Grafikanimationsstudio tätig waren. Werdet ihr es schaffen, euch bis in das Schloss des bösartigen Oni durchzukämpfen und die Bedrohung für das Land abzuwehren?

The Spirit of the Samurai es un título de acción con muy buenas ideas, un apartado artístico impresionante y sorprendente, y un sistema de combates y plataformas que limita la experiencia. Te divertirá pero te hará sentir que es injusto en algún momento, no por su dificultad, sino por su falta de pulido en la fluidez de movimientos y colisiones. Aquí quiero añadir que cuando estaba terminando el título metieron un parche que corrigió muchos bugs y que la experiencia de combate mejoró bastante al final, aunque todavía requiere ajustes para alcanzar la perfección. Si logran la fluidez en la lucha el juego conseguirá ser sobresaliente en todos sus apartados y la senda del samurái se recordará en nuestras tierras como una leyenda.

The Spirit of the Samurai takes a bold approach; therefore, Digital Mind Games deserves praise for that alone. Flawed as it is, the game is enjoyable enough for people who play experimental games. A flawed, memorable ride awaits within the game, which testifies to the creative energy of the game industry that has yet to end. If you can put up with the flaws, it gives just that.

We approached Digital Mind Games’ work with high expectations, but unfortunately, they weren’t fully met. While the potential for a great action game was there, issues with the combat system, gameplay, and a predictable story hold it back, leaving the title just shy of excellence.

Despite the frustrating hitboxes, the voices that break the immersion in the game's atmosphere or the flaws in the story's narration, The Spirit of the Samurai offers a reasonable experience in a well-detailed 2D world with an interesting combat system and stop-motion animations that synergize well with each other.

And that’s the crux of The Spirit of the Samurai: it is a gorgeous game, with an excellent sense of atmosphere, and decidedly troubled gameplay. At its best, it plays like a classic rotoscoped platformer, which can feel charming in its own right, but at its worst, it is cumbersome and awkward. This Samurai most certainly has spirit, but his sword could use a little sharpening.

It is obvious that it is put much effort into the game but the frustrating moments shadow all experience.

The Spirit of the Samurai has a great art style, but the story itself needs fleshing out. I had a few major issues with input lag throughout the game, which led to many pointless deaths. The combat is okay, but I found the combo system useless and the same for leveling up. I didn’t really use the bow either, as most of the time it felt like I had to be near the enemy. I really hated the checkpoints in this game and more so in the end-game area. If you die, you go all the way back, which was annoying. Especially when you have to fight across a bridge before fighting a boss. Some areas go on for too long, especially with waves of enemies. Chisai’s segments are cute but felt like they could be removed from the game and it wouldn’t change anything. The biggest thing to really tick me off was the final boss fight. I had horrendous drops in the frame rate when against him. The boss himself wasn’t hard, but frames would screw me over when attacking. The game seems a lot more on the artsy side for me compared to the actual gameplay. I find it deserves the Thumb Culture Silver Award, maybe after a couple of updates to fix the frames and controls it could be bumped to a gold.

Mentiría si no dijese que, su arte fue lo primero que me llamó la atención, pero… claramente su Gameplay me atrapo de principio a fin. Ese combate es tan artesanal con tanta personalidad que hace de su experiencia un cúmulo de emociones. Cada desliz de la katana es una explosión de colores, un festival de sangre, un viaje visceral hacia lo más retorcido. La idea de armar combos a placer hace que sus combates sean mucho más que machacar botones. Más bien, lo convierte en todo un arte con estampas entrañables gracias a ese majestuoso stop motion. Aunque tampoco puedo olvidar los dolores de cabeza que me han dejado sus secuencias de plataformeo, con ese gato que lleva algodones en lugar de garras. No es un mal juego, pero necesita algunos ajustes en sus controles, y una rigurosa prueba de calidad para depurar todos sus bugs… Ni siquiera pude terminar mi partida porque un enemigo no dropeo una llave sobre el final del juego… Me recordó a Hellblade Senua Sacrifice con la antorcha. Siento que, The Spirit of the Samurai intenta ser tantas cosas al mismo tiempo, que al final del día olvida por completo su identidad.

I want it to be known that I really wanted to like The Spirit of the Samurai. I am a massive fan of stop-motion animation, and any piece of media that utilises or seeks to evoke or pay homage to that style has earned my respect. That said, as well put-together as the cutscenes are, The Spirit of the Samurai is just not very fun as a game. From the clunky and unresponsive controls to the linear and murky levels filled with oddly placed traps and pitfalls, it can often feel like a slog to actually play. If you are a fan of stop-motion animation, then you may get something from the experience, but it is unlikely to be too satisfying for just about anyone else.

With frustrating combat and linear yet opaque progression, this samurai fails his mission.

Even if The Spirit of the Samurai does little to endear you to its story, the animation provides a decent jumping on point. Unfortunately, it's squandered by the terrible quality of everything else.

“Spirit of the Samurai” feels unfinished. A lot of gameplay elements feel half-baked – especially the annoying platformer passages. The story didn't grab me either, although the dark setting in feudal Japan would actually be right up my street. In the end, the stop-motion look is by far the best aspect of the game. And that alone is not enough for me to recommend it.
